ASN MembershipASN members total over 5,000, with many nutrition practice specialties and sub-fields represented. ASN is the premier research society dedicated to improving the quality of life through the science of nutrition. ASN is committed to bringing together the world's top nutrition medical practitioners, researchers, policy makers and industry leaders to translate and disseminate scientific knowledge about nutrition.
As ASN member David Heber, MD, PhD, FACP, Professor and Director, UCLA Center for Human Nutrition at UCLA, states, "Nutrition that is science-based and effective for your practice comes from a fundamental understanding of nutrition - the type of understanding that I have achieved through being an ASN member. ASN continually gives me a new appreciation of how nutrition can evolve my practice, through its annual meetings and co-sponsored sessions throughout the year."
ASN regular membership is open to any individual with a doctoral-level degree (i.e., MD, PhD, DDS, DVM, DPharm, etc.) in nutrition or a related field from an accredited institution with notable accomplishments as a lead, senior, or other author of a nutrition publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Allied health professionals such as dietitians and nurses are also eligible to join ASN.
Representative of ASN's strength in serving medical practitioners is the success of the Society's American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN). AJCN, publishing basic and clinical studies relevant to human nutrition since 1952, is the highest ranked peer-reviewed journal in the nutrition and dietetics field. Members of ASN receive free online access to AJCN, The Journal of Nutrition (JN) and Advances in Nutrition, ASN's new review journal.
ASN's dedication to evidence-based practice is proven in our commitment to turning research into tools and methods that strengthen your practice. Our journals, meetings and collegial networking are among the most respected in the world because they allow clinicians to quickly understand and apply responsible nutrition information in managing disease and promoting health. Advances & Controversies in Clinical Nutrition Conference, which features plenary sessions, interactive workshops and posters. ASN's Scientific Sessions and Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology also features medical nutrition programming, such as the yearly Clinical Nutrition Update - designed to bring medical school faculty up to date on breaking nutrition research themes.
To meet specific practice needs, all ASN members are eligible to join one of three Councils: Medical Nutrition, International Nutrition, or Nutritional Sciences. Medical Nutrition Council members receive the Medical Nutrition News, which is an expanded version of the Highlights e-newsletter. This digital publication contains a larger number of news briefs and is an exclusive member benefit.
In addition, ASN offers fifteen interest sections which are designed to provide a mechanism for topic-specific discussion, networking and learning. Opportunities are provided to earn CME credits for professional development. The Society provides a wide range of awards which annually recognize the top accomplishments in nutrition practice, and ASN members are routinely recognized by outside sources as the preeminent nutrition practitioners in the world.
