Excellence in Nutrition Research and Practice
American Society for Nutrition (ASN) members total over 3,800, with many nutrition practice specialties and sub-fields represented. ASN is the premier research society dedicated to improving the quality of life through the science of nutrition. ASN is committed to bringing together the world's top nutrition medical practitioners, researchers, policy makers and industry leaders to advance our knowledge and application of nutrition for the sake of humans and animals. Our members' practices range from the most critical details of research to the broadest applications in society. All of our medical practitioner members benefit greatly from ASN membership.

As ASN member David Heber, MD, PhD, FACP, Professor of Medicine and Public Health and Director, UCLA Center for Human Nutrition at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, states, "Nutrition that is science-based and effective for your practice comes from a fundamental understanding of nutrition - the type of understanding that I have achieved through being a member of ASN. ASN has given me a new appreciation of how nutrition can change my practice and bring my patients better results every day. I still learn new things by being part of ASN through its annual meetings and co-sponsored sessions throughout the year."

ASN regular membership is open to any individual with a doctoral-level degree (i.e., PhD, MD, DDS, DVM, DPharm, etc.) in nutrition or a related field from an accredited institution with notable accomplishments as a lead, senior, or other author of a nutrition publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Representative of ASN's strength in serving medical practitioners is the success of the Society's American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN). AJCN, published since 1952, is currently the highest ranked peer-reviewed journal in the nutrition and dietetics field. AJCN publishes basic and clinical studies relevant to human nutrition. Members of ASN receive free online access to AJCN, as well as the Society's research-based journal, the Journal of Nutrition (JN). ASN members also receive substantially discounted print subscriptions to both journals.

ASN's dedication to evidence-based practice is proven in our commitment to turning research into tools and methods that strengthen your practice. Our journals, meetings and collegial networking are among the most respected in the world because they allow clinicians to quickly understand and apply responsible nutrition information in managing disease and promoting health. To meet specific practice needs, all ASN members are eligible to join one of three Councils: Medical Nutrition, International Nutrition, or Nutritional Sciences. In addition, ASN offers fifteen interest sections which are designed to provide a mechanism for topic-specific discussion, networking and learning. Opportunities are provided to earn CME credits for professional development. The Society provides a wide range of awards which annually recognize the top accomplishments in nutrition practice, and ASN members are routinely recognized by outside sources as the preeminent nutrition practitioners in the world.
