Excellence in Nutrition Research and Practice

Dear American College of Sports Medicine Member:

The next Scientific Sessions and Annual Meeting of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) will be held in San Diego, CA April 4-9, 2008, in conjunction with Experimental Biology (EB). Our Society appreciates the participation of your organization as a guest society at our annual meeting. ASN, ACSM and our other co-sponsors have collaborated to develop many exciting sessions at this year's conference.

As an ACSM member, you save $100+ on registration! The early registration deadline is February 6, 2008! This meeting is a can't-miss event for over 13,000 scientists and allied health professionals. ASN values our strong relationship with ACSM, and we also invite you to submit abstracts for presentation at the 2008 Scientific Sessions.

On Saturday, April 5, ASN and ACSM will together present a special session: “Implementing a New Paradigm: Nutrition and Physical Activity—Steps toward a Preventive Approach to Health Care.” The ASN-ACSM Joint Session will convene at 3:00 p.m. and is chaired by James Hill and John Jakicic. James O. Hill, Ph.D. is Professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and the Director of the NIH-funded Center for Human Nutrition. John M. Jakicic, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor and Chair at the University of Pittsburgh, and the Director of the university's Physical Activity and Weight Management Research Center.

Other scientific programming throughout the meeting includes symposia, lectures, conferences, controversy debates, updates and more. ASN's premier keynote lectures are scheduled, including the Presidential Symposium (“Leptin: Weight Management and Beyond”), the E.V. McCollum International Lecture (“The World is Fat: Understanding the Patterns of the Nutrition Transition”), and the W.O. Atwater Lecture. Symposia will address urgent nutrition and metabolism issues, including “The Emerging Interplay among Muscle Mitochondrial Function, Nutrition and Disease” and “Vitamin D and Health in the 21st Century.” Controversy sessions of note include “Controversy: Carbohydrate Restriction as Treatment for Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome.”

Of course, as in the past, a vital component of the program will include abstract-driven minisymposia and poster sessions
. The ASN Research Interest Sections will program many of these sessions – be sure to take note of our various Sections, such as Energy and Macronutrient Metabolism. New Sections are currently in development, including Sections focused on Obesity and Nutrition Assessment.

The ASN program at EB 2008 will also include special social events. Our Awards Ceremony will highlight the preeminent researchers, clinicians and emerging scientists in the nutrition field. Additional social events include the Annual Meeting Reception and University Mixer, ASN Business Meeting, Fellows Luncheon, and many other networking opportunities. Greet old friends and meet new ones at our 2008 annual meeting!

As our associations collaborate to emphasize the integration of nutrition in exercise and sports science, we reinforce our shared goals. Another example of this cooperation is the ASN-ACSM summit “Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment of Childhood Obesity,” scheduled for May 2009, immediately prior to ACSM's Annual Meeting. To further our common objectives, you may wish to become an ASN member. Join ASN now – and enjoy the EB-related savings as a result!

We look forward to seeing you in San Diego, and to continuing our work together!
