The American Society for Nutrition (ASN)
Continuing Medical Education (CME) Mission Statement

CME PURPOSE: The Mission of the ASN CME Advisory Committee is to provide physicians with timely and credible information on nutrition that is effective, relevant, and incorporates the most current scientific research. Our goal is to assist in the dissemination of nutrition information and advances by providing physicians with the highest quality nutrition science to share with their patients.

CONTENT AREAS: The content of all current CME materials produced by the ASN will focus on timely and credible information on nutrition and its role in the promotion of health and the prevention and treatment of diseases. The course content is determined by needs analysis which includes literature review and consultation with experts to identify topics that are under represented in current CME curricula.

TARGET AUDIENCE: The primary target audience is physicians in the medical practice community as well as dietitians, students, and other allied health care professionals in the field of nutrition.

TYPES OF ACTIVITIES PROVIDED: The primary focus of the ASN CME activities are didactic courses, development and publication of enduring materials offered for CME credit, and the publication of periodic position papers on CME related topics. The effectiveness of each course is ultimately measured by its ability to impact patient health by assisting physicians in the development and/or maintenance of essential knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors related to nutrition. Assessment instruments such as knowledge tests and satisfaction surveys are also essential components of the CME program. The Society will extend our educational message to non-member physicians by seeking opportunities to co-sponsor CME events with other accredited medical societies and organizations and by offering workshops and seminars at the meetings of other organizations. These functions of the Society will be conducted in accordance with the standards established by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

EXPECTED RESULTS: As a result of these educational offerings, the ASN expects to improve patient care and health outcomes by assisting physicians in developing and maintaining nutrition knowledge, skills, and behaviors essential to promoting health and the treatment and prevention of chronic diseases in a rapidly changing practice environment. Additionally, the ASN is committed to assessing the impact of the curricula that has been developed by evaluation of each course.
