Marian Swendseid, PhD was born August 2, 1918 and passed away on January 19, 2014 after a prolific and distinguished career in nutrition science. Dr. Swendseid was a Professor Emerita at the University of California Los Angeles Fielding School of Public Health and an ASN Fellow (class of 1989). A pioneer in vitamin B12 metabolism and an expert regarding protein, choline, and folic acid, Dr. Swendseid was widely regarded as a devoted mentor and outstanding colleague. Among many scientific accomplishments, she established histidine as an essential amino acid for adults. At the time of her passing, she was a 54-year member of ASN, where she also served as an Associate Editor for The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Read a brief biography of Dr. Swendseid, and view the tribute issued by the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.

In Marian's memory, a scholarship fund has been established with the ASN Foundation. The Dr. Marian Swendseid Nutrition and Cancer Prevention Scholarship Fund will provide support to students or investigators focused in the area of nutrition and cancer prevention. It is anticipated that the first scholarship will be extended in fall 2014. Instructions for scholarship applicants will be forthcoming.

Help us preserve Dr. Swendseid's legacy by giving to this Memorial Fund. Contributions are gratefully accepted from individuals, corporations or organizations. You can donate using a credit card on ASN's secure website or by completing and returning the donation form.
