An article published online in AJCN on February 8 suggests that substituting whole grains for refined grains increases calorie loss and speeds up metabolism. This research from Tufts University has been featured on national news outlets including ABC's Good Morning America and NBC's Today Show.  A related study also published online February 8 studies the effect of whole grains on gut microbiota. Substituting whole grains for refined grains in a 6-wk randomized trial favorably affects energy-balance metrics in healthy men and postmenopausal women, by JP Karl et al.

Substituting whole grains for refined grains in a 6-wk randomized trial has a modest effect on gut microbiota and immune and inflammatory markers of healthy adults, by SM Vanegas, et al.
